Mountain Sickness
I am possessed by the desire
to go and climb
Skiddaw once more,
look down on Keswick and its lake
melting into Borrowdale.
To see clouds resting
on the Langdale Pikes; come upon
Blea Tarn, casually loitering
as if tomorrow it might
not be there.
To climb Scafell in mist,
hear once more those boys, unseen,
who called to us
as we were searching for
a guiding stream.
Be terrified
on Striding Edge; feel the claw
of fear as I look down
into the tarn, where last year
that girl was found.
I would give anything
to see them once again
these giants, rising
so suddenly, surprisingly
from their surrounding plain.
