Do we count as ex’s
the people we wanted to sleep with
but didn’t? Or do we limit it to
dated and recorded exchanges of fluid?
Does wine count? - in a cup or crystal?
Rye bread torn and smeared with butter
waiting for the soup to come and if they rose
and left before the oyster platter?
How about coffee? Does having coffee
with someone one time make you ex’s?
Or is it only the desire - the look in the corridor
the memory of something or other
that threatens your present girlfriend?
Those we never loved may be
harder by far to consider friends
than those whose hands we pressed and dropped
and may hold up now for inspection
like fresh laundered napkins almost without stain.
