Now I see him as my father did: life
thrusting naked. The fairy-tale by Grimm,
not Disney. The choir-boy twists forth a note.
Village houses heave and lean in an ill wind.
I’d had the Orangerie in mind so long
I’d forgotten why: that it was here I’d find
Soutine. Reds blotch. Greens rot. A bilious yellow
emits angst. A woman grimaces, writhes.
Dad grimaced, writhed; called Soutine father at
a retrospective in New York. He reeled
from the gallery, stood watching buildings squirm,
cabs toss the length of 57th Street.
Back in the studio he turned mid-wife
as the choir-boy gave birth: breathed soul
into the woman cycling from his mouth,
her own wide open, uptilted for the howl.
