The Way The Child
the way the child might scrub all the tombstones
so that no one is forgotten no one is ever completely submerged
memory gleaming in those instants of immediacy
a clarity of pain in which heart stops steps falter
and no one else knows why
the way the child does things apologetically
knowing such actions might be perceived as insane
proceeds anyway because these are necessary actions
necessary to the cleansing to the memory to the letting go
intuition overcoming social regulation
the way the child swallows hard carries on keeps a brave face
apologizing for tears when they rise escaping to sleep whenever possible
submerging thoughts for years before fully able to re-embrace self
admit the substance of reality of action of pain dwindling
dropping into passing time
