Words of soap-bubble lifetimes changed us.
On the breeze prismically blown, we remember
words do that, don’t they? Or life does.
Ill fitting playing clothes, duffle toggles
and snake buckles we could fiddle with,
words of soap-bubble lifetimes changed us.
We loved. The girls down the avenue,
each other without ever saying, never saying;
words do that, don’t they? Or life does.
We loved. Our pets, our Mums, Dads, Grans,
Grandads, Uncles, playing out, the free air.
Words of soap-bubble lifetimes changed us.
Embarrassingly private things forgotten,
growing up but not grown up. Pretending.
Words do that, don’t they? Or life does.
The smell of flotsam and salty tasting spray
on our faces we’ll never forget. We were pirates.
