China Blue
I’m working on the border, sifting through the debris of a dozen
shattered lives.
Everything I touch falls back to dust or comes to pieces in my hands
except this twist of porcelain and here, three yards apart,
two blue-veined fragments
that might still connect despite the silt and slippage in between.
Is it a mapping
of the human heart, this frail unfinished narrative in which two
lovers make their way
across an ornamental bridge pursued by someone’s father and the
world not noticing?
I scrape away the years of mud. Her parasol still tilts into the light.
Her arm still links
with his arm as they step into the blue; a squat pagoda sits out
on the lake
in the centre of an island hung with trees. Two love birds flutter
off towards the rim.
