Off shore
You've left a receipt as a marker
in the book you said I must read
liking boats and all, thrust into my hand
as you ran for your bus, mac flapping.
You've forgotten the tacky junk shop
by the back of the railway near the towpath
where I picked it up for you, a cheap
birthday present, belated, and the nights
I read bits out to you: people like us,
you said, turning over in the dark.
I fold the paper, slip it back in.
The Maxwell Caravan Park, Cleethorpes.
One night, two people, 1993, £8.40,
paid. It rained and the roof leaked.
I don't mind, I can laugh. It's not as if
things are really over. There's always
the residue, like tidemarks on the carpet tiles,
the stains of the washed out mud.
