Mercy
With a sailor hat, and her kitten
Tucked in a coat and warm,
You, will you keep my daughter
From any particular harm?
I mean because of the habit
Of love, and the way she has
Of leaning upon the shoulder
Of this bent world of Yours,
As if she feared no disaster
Wound in the skein of the years,
No beaten man or woman
Crawling upon all fours,
But trusted whatever happens
Is destined to occur;
If You have need of mercy,
God, have mercy on her.
