On the way down it was Newmarket, Gin Rummy,
between drills and repeats of Apocalypse Now
until, on a day like today, with aching shoulders,
soaking wet boots in the same slanting rain,
laughter stopped, Whist was interrupted
and, as we whispered, it all looked like a film
and more so when I squeezed the trigger slowly,
then again, again, again. Silence
until, after going through the Argies' pockets,
we played with a pack I'd found, poker,
and I dealt myself all the aces, raised the stakes,
took, for the last time, IOUs, the piles of change.
