Two Brazilian Poets: Carlos Drummond de Andrade
Antonio Claudio Carvalho, the translator of the following poem, writes: ‘Carlos Drummond de Andrade is probably the best poet alive in Brazil. In October last year he completed 70 years. It’s a long poetic time since the days at his parents’ farm in the country, in Minas Garais. A long time since he had his first poem published in 1918 in a small newspaper in Itabira do Mato Dentro, his home town. ‘Since 1930 Carlos Drummond de Andrade has published 28 books, one of them, Rio de Janeiro in Prose and verse, with Manuel Baneira.
