Storm Over The Dordogne
I imagined that the cow-pulled tractors had begun
to bring the sky down in huge chunks of clouds which
broke up in giant streams and fell around the barn.
The massive morning twilight clasped the Couze firmly,
I pushed the shutters to a clasping mist in the valley
and watched the Earth receive the generous sun quietly
through a wet sieve. Humble strips of cultivation moved
to make peace with hen and duck and some idling pigs,
while a nit-wit magpie, concealed under an ancient tile,
bore the load of medieval ill and glory on its spine.
