Magma is distinct from other poetry magazines because each
issue has a different editor. The editorship circulates among the small
group that runs the magazine, with an occasional guest editor. Each editor brings his or her particular interests to bear, resulting in poems and emphases that no-one else in the group could have predicted.
The group is united by its commitment to the best in contemporary poetry, whether it comes from first time writers or established poets. We look for poems which give a direct sense of what it is to live today – honest about feelings, alert about the world, sometimes funny, always well crafted. Magma includes reviews of current publications and thought-provoking prose. When we chose the title Magma it was to suggest the molten matter beneath the earth’s crust, fluid, deep and unpredictable. We publish three times a year in spring, summer, and winter, with a selection of poems and articles on our website.
Karen Green, editor of Magma 30, lives and writes in London. John Stammers is Guest Editor of Magma 31 (February 2005). He invites poems that respond to the visual arts, as well as poems on other topics. Magma 32 (May 2005) will be edited by Mick Delap who invites, among poems on any subject, some that concern themselves with the sea.
The launch reading for Magma 30 is at 8 pm on Monday 22 November 2004 in the Coffee-House Poetry series at the Troubadour Coffee House, 265 Old Brompton Road, London SW5 (email CoffPoetry @aol.com). The nearest tube station is Earl's Court. The guest poets are Kathryn Gray and Roddy Lumsden. Admission is the normal Coffee-House charge of £5.50 (£4.50 concessions).
Anniversary Reading
Magma 30 is our Tenth Anniversary Issue. A special article includes an interview with Andrew Motion. An Anniversary Reading will take place at the Cochrane Theatre in Soho on 21st January, with many guest readers including Don Paterson, Clare Pollard and John Stammers, and an opportunity for contributors to read. See page 83 for details and updates on our website www.magmapoetry.com.
Festivals
Magma participated in the Dover and Deal Festival in June where David Boll talked about what Editors look for in contributions, and ran a workshop. At the Essex Festival in Chelmsford in October, Magma poets including Roddy Lumsden and Angela Kirby read from recent and forthcoming collections.

Correction
We apologise for a transcription error in Mathew Caley’s article Neo-hogbutchererbigdriftities in Magma 29. The para in section iii which runs from ‘Yet many young contemporary’ to ‘amongst other things’ should be at the end of section iv. A corrected version of the whole article has been posted on our website.
