Disco Girl and the Rain
The club doors have closed
and the taps
of music
and booze
have been switched off
and the sweat and smoke
have crawled away
and he has gone home
and she stands alone
in the street
wet with night.
beneath the yellow
lamppost eye
she peers through
blurring pencil.
cold wet torrents
make sewers of her lacquered hair
smears her orange face
like tears
(but she’s never cried)
raindrops drip red
varnished finger ends
and the gash that she talks through
is frayed
and fraying now as she
mouthes to dead walls
soaking her sting.
and she crumbles
into the yellow pool
of light
at her feet
and she sees herself coming up
as she goes down
and she sees herself going down
as she comes up.
