Plover Scar
By night the lighthouse wades
a mussel dark sea, blinks
a blank light at the horizon,
by day sits empty brained
above brown water churned with sky.
Stand here and you stand alone,
held fast by the stretched sheet
of your eye.
This is where the tide ebbs endlessly
sucks flavour from the marsh,
where the channel's wake drives
the land in on itself,
where the posts of haaf nets
are all that break the mirage of the mudflats.
Listen and the voices in your head
fall silent, the curlew's cry
boils out of earshot.
Oystercatchers stab
at the nerve ends of the shore,
and a raw wind triple jumps from the sea
to plunge its edge
right in your heart.
