Enough Remembering
stop turning back and stooping to examine
the dragging bridal train of time gone by,
so long its end is still outside the door
sweeping the street. It’s cluttered with dead leaves,
dropped fagends, travel tickets, chances missed.
What’s done is done; what’s left is time-proof litter.
Enough of finding clues and picking over
good and evil. Nothing can be cancelled.
This is the present, turning into future:
so look ahead, ignore your crumpled train
or any other train, the kind with wheels
and carriages still lived in by the dead:
your prewar childhood, siblings, fellow students,
parents who cannot now reply to questions
you never thought to ask.
The past should lie there like geology
not turn into unmanageable luggage
to be manhandled into my short future.
Here it is June. My eightieth midsummer
is rich with briar roses, oxeye daisies,
foxgloves and foaming elderflower dishes.
I see them from the train that carries me
too fast through Sussex cuttings.
