Breakfast Special
We’re posed ready, jam jars to our lips,
Grandpa’s army blanket rougher than the grass
Shadows haunt our sleeves, wasps
Or the distant phone crying like a bird
Nearer, the toy box lid trembles,
Legendary arms and legs scuffling underneath
Who is coming? Quickly lick the sun
Dripping through the slatted blinds
It’s hotting up: Noah is made David
By the Goliath of Teddy. Blue Duck
Bends toast. Oh where, where is Small Grey Jumbo?
She sails on shadows as huge as the sea.
His fruit-soft face is smeared with chocolate
Like an exotic pudding. The briefcase
Is a mountain, he tells me. Only good
And very clever trains can climb this mountain.
The blinds ruffle briefly. It’s a breeze.Bills flutter
on the pinboard. Upright as headstones
Photos repeat the story of his face and mine,
While sirens tow us into the ordinary day.
