Gingham covered tables receive steak plates
piled with griddled onions. Seeds I can't name
parachute into beers or flounder on hash browns.
Newsagent opposite sells Hershey's, porno, Sharpshooter.
He's there. Shapeshifter
laughing through a torn moccasin.
Half man, half crow,
blue black eyes - oil beading water.
Now racoon, rummaging trash in front of diners.
He tells we're bobbing for poison apples,
harvesting tares, selling the cow for beans,
buying fool's gold.
Sidewalks haven't felt rain in weeks.
No snow this fall.
I walk away from gilded beer, buckets of wings,
seeds twitching against steak like angry ghosts.
On looking back he may be gone
or still prospecting garbage for that lost nugget.
