Hair Cut
A change of style can be as tricky as re-potting cacti.
Not that there have been many dreadful haircuts
but that Planet of the Apes bob I crept around with for a week
when the world was spiky punk still returns in dreams.
Coincidentally, today my hairdresser wants to discuss
late ‘70s rock, a warning I should note, be unadventurous
leave with just a trim. But there, I’ve said it
those two words, that incantation: Something different.
You see, I am yearning for that moment after the hair
has fallen, formed mice nests on the floor, collected
like lathe shavings in the dip of the green wrap
that covers my knees, the moment after the dusting brush
frisks my neck, the bridge of my nose, not quite removing
every trace of snipped prickly fuse-wire, when I’ll turn and be
helium-headed for a snatched breath, a mirror’s glint.
Before it feels normal, before the hair starts to grow.
