Hazell Hills
At Home in the Living Room
He retires, after an exam he says was crap, to hunch in front of the television. Tomorrow, he knows - and I, his mother, know – brings yet another A Level he’s not revised for. His older sister, A Levelled last year, sits apart, chain migrained, out-of-work for months.

Two pigeons free-fall,
the sky transparent through their pantiled wing-tips
before they slot
into an airstream
to let themselves be drawn away.Twilight makes outside the backdrop.

No purpose
No purposeful purposelessness
so that we can say
“Ah, this is just like Beckett” or
“Here is Ionesco’s Theatre of the Absurd”.It is nothing
That can be
Packaged, labelled or conveniently contained.
They are it.
It is them.I cannot see a yellow-brick road
Apparent in this set,
No rainbowed cyclorama.
No permanent right of way.And there is no intermission.
