returning the leg
it had such a smooth surface
such an unnatural white-coffee tan
the taxi driver had flicked his cigarette
towards the statue of the frozen explorer
as the trees moved past slowly
bowing their great green heads
at the iron gates I noticed
how well the spikes had survived

except for the phantom pains
the nod was sympathetic but still
