Edward Dutton
Spy
She neatly slips into her skirt,
folds into a scarlet top
exposing a pierced navel,
the lack of a bra,
the cool, white flesh.
The other clubbers like her.
She laughs, listens,
sips a Coke, dances;
but avoids their mouths
like a trained handler.
She’s trained all right –
to burrow into the mud,
to blend into the bracken,
to strap on the bullet-proof vest.
This spy
who reports each night
(and in unbreakable code)
to an omnipresent master
who bathes her mind
like desert-weary feet.
And to other spies
just like her
who dance in London clubs
while all the time
they stand - together –
in Jesus.
