Elegy VII (VI)

breath-mist
water
ice
&
snow
this morning
I stand before my tables
my long tables
of breath-mist
of ice
of water
& this morning
of snow
with my scraps of fresco
my calendars
my sundials
measuring nothing but themselves
I began this book
precisely 20 years ago
time flows and doesn't flow
inside the hourglass
glass is fragile
glass is transparent
glass is useful
for a long time
keeping the wolf from the door
has had no metaphoric value
floating or fixed
the dollar rate
is also a tautology
money circulates
money corrupts
money can be laundered
with time
metaphors and love affairs
exhaust themselves
and the glass buried in mud
becomes iridescent
