Distressing Furniture
It was the day that mother’s house was sold
(a year on from her hundredth birthday there)
and they were talking in the shop about
‘distressing furniture’, grain, patina, age:
the stained armchair,
layers of cushions
moulded to shape;
the thirties sideboard,
collectable but ugly;
the sturdy table
with grooves never cleaned -
a history itself
of postwar English food;
the home-made sixties coffee-tables;
the broken sewing-box;
the child-size chair;
the bed with rails.
