Brian Lewis has been walking and photographing London’s margins since 1999. Recently, the focus of these activities has shifted to the lower reaches of the Thames Estuary. The tidal waters east of Woolwich have, for centuries, made the land at the riverline notoriously difficult to settle; even now, a substantial part of this is virgin marsh. Where the marsh breaks, the ‘stink industries’ pitch their workings: the air tells the traces of oil, sugar, landfill and sewage from the plants and refineries scattered along the banks. The silt works records a concern with the outward conditions of these sites. A collection of prints, The halt, is currently in preparation.
