Sigmund Freud and Ernest Jones
walked barefoot on the beach
and talked of the Zentralblatt meeting;
how Jung muddled the date and sent
Jones’s invitation to the wrong address.
No gentleman should do such things,
even subconsciously!
The long grass nodded on the dunes,
a windmill turned.
Quick eyes darting everywhere
Freud poked the seaweed with his stick,
dislodging dark green leaves –
one might find something interesting ...
the slimy blisters didn’t pop,
the sea washed over them
and rearranged the shapes.
He found a shell for Anna
and gave his boys a florin and a half
to ride a horse. A heron stood on
one thin leg, Pannekoek was excellent
and sunsets glorious.
But the flatness palled
and families on bicycles were boring.
The next year Freud returned to mountains.
