Light Sensitive
It was the way the light changed and only four o’clock.
All that remained of the sun was a ridge of gold, resplendent,
about the hills. He said it reminded him of St Mark’s Square
where you felt the shadow of the year, its turning-point,
not the day’s, apparent. She reads into this his regret at being here -
he honeymooned in Venice with his first wife.
He says something in French which she doesn't understand.
What she stands now to lose in translation was never hers
in the first place. Her voice catches so he switches the topic
to the Swiss and Italian settlement of the district.
The trees have already coloured. Leaves shiver along a vein of beguilement.
One more round as they read the benefits of each mineral element
pumped along its own stone channel. They sip from each other’s palms, cupped
for this last benison – sulphur, magnesium, iron – until the sun has gone.
