The most exciting thing I ever did
was crawl a mile underground
with Lyndon Morris in 1957
along a flue tunnel from a Victorian
paper mill, long since abandoned,
in a forested valley in Wales.
No-one knew we were there; and when
we eventually emerged, blinking,
into the twilight, our whoops
ricocheted off surrounding trees.
Some nights, even now, I lie awake
and imagine the rockfall
in that Plutonian passageway,
how nobody heard our screams,
how we were never found.
