A Wooden Spoon
Lost in a thicket of spanking-new plastic
it looks overtaken by technology, abandoned
for its dirty skin, germs imagined
in its grain.
An early purchase, it stirred
our marriage into life, pioneered recipes,
scooped successes, beat disasters.
On one edge, its bowl
has curved into a pleasing eccentricity
varnished by a thousand eggs
and oxloads of olive oil, stained
by bubbling caramel, gallons
of Bisto gravy...
Ah, only a booby wouldn’t prize it.
It feels right in the fingers.
It doesn’t scratch the Teflon.
It doesn’t melt or char in the pan.
It just keeps feeding our appetites.
Metal spoons strike sparks
lead to explosions. Wooden spoons
are loving spoons, as this one is.
