A few minutes spent poring over an atlas
Out there beyond the cruise liners
and the spinnakers blooming like rainbows
at the edge of the bay where the sky
greets the sky with a kiss, I guess,
and beyond the sands where outriggers wait
and their crews pick at nets, humming
the old songs over and over,
beyond the black rock
the bear sits watching
the cold white disc
lift through mist.
There s a terror in flags. Their smug
beauties,
the pressure of design,
the way they hide centuries of souls
and years of pain locked into stone and
iron.
Oceans swash. Breakers tickle the rocks.
When the plane smashed into the city in
fog,
more was unknown than ever questioned.
Legal process. Cobwebs. Mysteries.
Yet somehow the legends get recorded:
boulders roll, trees regenerate,
nations of flowers reclaim their homelands.
