Taking Stock
He stares, uncomprehending, at the alien landscape
shawled in patchy snow
laced with black ice
flung like late winter’s afterthought
across the shoulders of the hillside.
This raw, damp cold
clutches him in its grip,
bares no resemblance to the warm fluid
that cradled him before the journey
through the dark canal.
He tests splintery legs,
unsure that they are his,
stumbles on sharp stones in short grass,
then totters back
to blot himself against his mother’s side.
Briefly the new-spun fleece interweaves
with older, grubbier coat,
both foils for the stark symmetry
of indelible logo imprinted on plump flank
and skinny ribs.
