Walking with neighbours
For A and A
On a Sunday a single sad bell
would lie across this autumn soil
like its own funeral procession;
but a grey Saturday
waiting for tomorrow
can give an impression of reality:
religion is not a necessity.
For instance, the flints still call
from the walls of older barns
and even the roof reeds show impatience;
small roads are worn upon the neighbourhood
like black armbands, and the silence
cannot hold its tongue in this mood.
All birthday cards are elegiac now:
the names of everyone we’ve known
clutter the empty fields of a dry season.
And following our footsteps
through gaps in their hawthorn hedge
overweight white turkeys huddle together and holler
like the newly dead calling for their lives.
