Postcards are a kind of sensory exercise, an unappreciated playground for the eyes. Just that these clumsy snapshots, these disposable evocations allow the possibility of developing new styles of visualization.
Printed scenery bumps against the sight, the commercially-available depictions jostle the immediate landscape. Because pictures are always faintly archaic, these fertile procrastinations of the camera impel a rearranging of perception. The bystanders and autos and weather smeared on the cardstock inevitably differ from the firsthand image...so this disjunction between the expectation and the seen encourages a changed beholding. Photos are the dotted line between the inner and the abyss.
