Ngong, 1952, during the Mau Mau
At dusk, being near a native reserve,
she took a roll call of her servants,
told them to lock themselves in their quarters,
not to come out.
Now she turns to the verandah, goes inside -
the house cooling in the dark, her steps swift
on the parquet as she gathers up her young son,
prepares to drive through the forest to join a friend.
Passing the hours the two women play cards,
revolvers on the table - their hands quick
in front of the fire; against black windows
thin curtains are drawn as if to stop
the night catching their sharp laughter.
