Cloak Room
You slide two white arms
into your new mackintosh –
the one you were proud of
until someone laughed at it.
Buttoned up chest,
you stand on the bench,
slip the mackintosh back
where it was
with you in it.
What is you, will vanish.
And someone, by mistake,
might wear you home:
a home where kicked-off shoes
breed in the porch,
and what bumps into you
is the smell of supper
and someone will shout
but only hello
like the first two notes
of a song.
