Evening Class
Last week, driving back amongst
the sightless herds of cars
skirting the moor, heading west,
slow drizzle, and semi-tranced
by night and stillness, and our streaming
like an arrow through this
dreaming landscape, and wondering
where you are, and if you’ll call
when my eyes are gripped
by horror: a wide wet skid
of blood, fresh, sticky, cuts
a red arc like a scream
across the tarmac, right to
left, to end abruptly, sliced through
as clean as knives. A gaping yard
away, and marking out the margins,
the half-flayed badger’s rictus
haunts me still. The drenching smell
of blood is plastered on the landscape.
All week I wait for your call,
while the badger’s silent voice
seeps like a slow stain,
spreading across our distances.
