Caroline Price
Speed and my Sister
I have come back to a place
I do not recognise.
She stands like a shadow
on the other side, blank eyes
flickering round the walls.
Everything she knew
to do or say
has gone, deserted her.
There is nothing here
to eat, she tries at last
from that great distance.
But oh yes, some fruit -
taking the bowl
as if it has suddenly been handed to her
out of the darkness;
holding out an orange
whose underside is soft, green-white,
furred with mould
like something brought out of the underworld
disintegrating in light.
