The Voyage
As if it were as delicate and as strong
as a birch bark and resin patched canoe
hauled upriver every year by voyageurs,
this motley group of humans, band of kindred
makes its way over the difficult terrain
of living, of giving birth and being born
mustering strength, carrying on,
barring accidents, keeping ourselves afloat,
and by some miracle the barque that contains us,
that is us, arrives intact at the shining inland lake
which is the year’s end. We are here again
and it’s as big as the sea, open and beckoning us on.
