Steve Langley
A Fishy Ending
This fish now floats, alone,
A shoal-less sole,
And sinks within
Its wreck of weeds.
Those curling, bloated fingers
Of barnacle green,
That clutch and cling
To fish-bone body;
To tight-fit fabric
Of flaming mail;
Of tight-knit scale.
Such delicate petals of metal,
Cold, nacreous, scarlet scabs,
Those dabs of colour, wan and unwell
They catch my quickened eye,
So unlike those wet, dead globs,
That blackly glint their fishy farewell
A deep-freeze farewell, that simple
This filmy, salt-glazed, Baltic story
FIN!
