Seascape at Palavas; the beach empty of dogs,
the sky of birds, the sea of ships –
only the man himself, in dapper city clothes,
raising his hat to the elements he outfaces.
More than his brushwork or pigments,
the use of impasto, I love his bombastic ego –
the arrogant, futile gesture of defiance
seen from behind, from the rocks
where he’s placed us, his audience, to watch
his mock-heroics, his daring. His back.
