February '89: Anywhere
Walked in the February park
the kept-off grass littered with unpaid
gas and electricity bills.
On a frost-bitten bench an old man
counted his decimal money to see
if it added up to an existence.
Walked in the February park
had a February vision of Kafka-man
shivering in an interrogation cell.
Walked in the February park
and the kids came running out of school
shouting and shoving to play on the swings.
The sun went very red and there
was this very ordinary girl taking
her February rights of a very young man.
And suddenly like urban guerrillas
crocuses were pushing up out of the grass
without waiting for the twenty-eighth day.
