Blown Out
These days I enjoy myself so much I get depressed.
Somewhere in my cortex a pleasure too far trips
a switch and puts the lights off. The music stops
and there’s the sound of thoughts crashing out.
Ot it’s like overeating at friends’. A little guilty
and a tad flat, you get home, flop out on the bed,
consider bread and water and a week
in a zen monastery to make room for desire again.
What I have to do on these occasions is go into town,
find a seat (the museum steps, the bench
outside the bookie’s) and count – grey cardigans
or baseball caps worn back to front.
After a while I’ll slip into the second-hand bookshop
to browse sections I’m not the least bit interested in.
You never know, fresh light may be shed on things
as I read 'Stress for Engineers' or 'Goose Husbandry'.
