Julian Flanagan
Insect Noise, Jamaica
A lawn-mower is cutting lanes
through the stairwell’s plot of air.
Outside, B-Feature UFOs
whirr invisibly all the fat afternoon.
They rise slowly in saucer-spread branches
to hover at full throttle.
And at supper,
past the rim of veranda storm lights,
the garden is haunted
by dialling phones and Newton’s Cradles,
radios broadcasting static
and the shuffling of worry beads.
Julian Flanagan is a freelance copywriter who lives and works in London. Married with three children, he writes during cigarette breaks in the garden. He is saving up contributions for a first collection.
