Winterwood
Through treble-thick stone converted
stable walls I hear a horse canter in puddles
– close-up – bidden slow
at temporary lights on the cobbled way.
Night-bus headlamps sweep drystone
walling. Stark with no passengers
to speak of. A relief driver focuses hard
on the hill-edge poplar windbreak;
awaits the blur of amber; glances
night-skyward, tense with unpredictable hemispheres,
the aligning of planets. And you reach out to me
in the sealed dark of our windowless world,
have me stroke the back of your neck
as I emerge from companies of village ghosts
that follow and find me, far from home
on a street where I’ve never been,
alighting perhaps from a lit bus that slowed
but never stopped. We slip soundly,
waken to coachouse quiet and the hush of crows.
