Grandma wasn’t often seen in 22 Garfield Street, Watford North
From inside her button box
the waterfall of metal and bone tumbled
over the moss-covered rocks of my left hand.
Most of grandma lived in the briskness of Dorset hills
those bare-backed horses maned with grass outside Powerstock.
Here she was born. Watched for adders under her feet
and friends who lay in the grass, talked to them in Dorset biscuity chunks.
Worked with the sun’s fat clock
that ticked when it wanted and never published regulations.
Valerie Lynch has had a varied career, from lecturing in economics and in archaeology, to Keeper of Archaeology in a City Museum; from 1984 she has worked as a psychotherapist.
