Drifter
(hot air balloon G-BVIX)
Floating, up through the cold January air,
to the left and behind
a low winter sun shines through
the haze of Wycombe and the motorway beyond.
Drifting over the Bledlow Ridge,
the view much clearer,
on our right the Chilterns in sharp relief,
below greens and browns, folded into a
neat Home Counties symmetry.
Occasional fields under a steep slope
or a line of tall trees
still hard and white with frost,
flying low over the Three Horse Shoes pub
we wave to the Sunday lunch timers
before gently bumping into a paddock scruff
as the sun finally dips below Bennetts End.
