The Windows
Somehow it slips by him every night.
His wife, snug in her kitchen window-niche,
watches the birds scatter and fold to silence.
His hand moves to press his desklamp switch
without awareness of the changing light.
She enters sometime soon without disturbance,
places a glass of sherry to his reach,
quietly steps round to draw his curtains.
Somewhere there’s an evening when she’ll find
his life-habit empty in the usual place
in the unusual absence of the lamp’s pool;
or when, quite late, his gut will pinch his mind
to register they haven’t had a meal
and the naked windows shock him with his own face.
