Yet it is hard to imagine anything more beautiful
than strong coffee on a summer afternoon
in the shadow of one's room, in the intention
of the four walls forcing out the weight
of memory. Who said that memory
is like a beach, and why should white waves
divide in order to let in
some light, not much, precisely what‘s needed?
A dusted shaft suddenly means so much,
its gothic and baroque passing into
a gilded rococo. It settles on the shelves
and carves book-spines, as creased as
cloud-backs I can imagine
outside the window, and not here, in this room
with no mirrors but polished surfaces
which beam back the ebony light endlessly.
