My Historic Birthday
Al Capone, Anton Chekhov and I
were bitched on the same January day:
three wise guys pitched into the century
under the Zodiac’s most baleful sign.
Al and Anton didn’t live that long;
unlike them I just made fifty.
The silhouette marching ahead
is death’s veteran, soldiering on
between indifference and forgiveness.
Sometimes I fear he’s survived too long;
the bullet with his number
is closer now, not farther on.
In Berkeley, California, Allen Ginsburg
wrote America on my seventh birthday.
Things work out the way they want to
this side of the rock between heaven and hell,
Cicero and Yalta, the wild waters of the seagull
and the red penthouse of the Lexington Hotel.
