Slim as Fred Astaire, in brogues and blazer,
a footloose S.S.E.B. journeyman –
he could loosen into a tap routine
right there on Gourock’s gusty promenade,
or do the hip swivel that left hob-nailed
Army full-backs swearing in his slipstream.
(ii) 1974
Thinning hair as in Reginald Perrin,
eyes oily and scared behind thick black specs.
Forty-odd, in Rothesay for Fair Fortnight,
he stands with his back to the river, hands
drooped over his stoop-shouldered, grinning boys –
a destroyer coming out of his head.
