Man in the dark
His lowly soul so slow to show that it can care,
Or cannot care, that it is even barely aware
That all that it had, and all that it held
Is shot straight to hell without hope to heal.
So ring no bell to tell or toll,
He had his chance, forgiven once
If he was forgiven four thousand times.
For you see my heart was foolish while his heart was hard,
They once beat together, only to die apart.
I spoke of my sorrow to the quiet of night,
Shed my fears and tears alike,
For he would not spare time to share my despair.
On me he dared not waste a breath
Lest it hinder his trek, and precious progress,
Place a gnarled branch across his path
To glorification and sublime self love.
I informed him with fear how I thought death was not far,
How it lurked behind me deep in the dark
To steal the warmth from my blood,
The beat from my heart.
And to those words he laughed.
My dear, came his sneer,
That vampire bat who drank your blood,
Who held your hand to hold you back,
Who faked it all, who set the rack;
That man in the dark set to steal your heart,
To quell its beat and bury you deep,
That none shall hear your scream or plea -
That damned man, my dear, is always me.
